Habarana is the strategic hub of the Cultural Triangle: a small junction town at the intersection of the roads to Sigiriya (28 km), Polonnaruwa (55 km) and Anuradhapura (60 km) that has earned its place on every serious Sri Lanka itinerary as an overnight base. Staying in Habarana means your private driver has Sigiriya and Dambulla to the south, Minneriya and Kaudulla elephant parks to the northeast, and Polonnaruwa's ancient city to the east — all within a 45-minute drive. The village itself organises elephant-back safaris into the surrounding forest (booking direct rather than via resorts avoids commissions) and a famous evening lake-side gathering of toque macaques at the village tank. It is also the traditional starting point for traditional village cycle tours through paddy fields and spice gardens.
