Hatton with a private driver

Hatton is the main town in the Dikoya-Hatton tea district, perched at around 1,200 metres in the central highlands and flanked by some of Sri Lanka's most productive high-grown tea estates. The town itself is a workaday colonial-era railway junction — the Colombo–Badulla mainline stops here — but it earns its place on private-driver itineraries as the staging post for two major experiences: the tea plantation drive along the A7 through Norwood, Maskeliya and the Bogawantalawa valley (home to some of the island's finest orthodox teas), and the overnight ascent of Adam's Peak. The pilgrimage to Sri Pada's sacred footprint at 2,243 metres draws Buddhist, Hindu, Muslim and Christian devotees — the interfaith summit is unique in Asia. Pilgrims typically start climbing at 2am from Nallathanniya (Dalhousie), about 35 minutes from Hatton by car. Your driver waits at the base, ready to collect you as the mist clears and the famous shadow of the perfect pyramid summit is cast westward at dawn.
