Sri Lanka's Hill Country climbs from Kandy up through Nuwara Eliya and out to Ella — a green, cool interior of tea plantations, waterfalls and colonial hill stations that feels a world away from the coast. This is the most scenic driving in the country, and the region built around one iconic experience: the hill train between Nanu Oya (Nuwara Eliya) and Ella, widely called one of the world's great rail journeys. The train, and how a driver makes it easy
The famous ride is the Nuwara Eliya (Nanu Oya) to Ella leg — about four hours past tea fields and through pine forest, over the Nine Arch Bridge. Book a reserved seat where you can, but even in an ordinary carriage it's unforgettable. With a private driver you ride the train one-way and your driver meets you at the other end with your luggage, so you never have to backtrack or carry bags.
How long you need in the Hill Country
Give it three to four days: a day for Kandy, a day for Nuwara Eliya and the tea estates, the train down to Ella, and a day or two around Ella for Little Adam's Peak and the Nine Arch Bridge. Early risers can add Horton Plains for the World's End hike. The full Kandy-to-Ella chain is a natural second leg after the Cultural Triangle, before dropping to the south coast.

Three to four is ideal — one for Kandy, one for Nuwara Eliya and tea country, the train to Ella, and a day around Ella. You can do a rushed version in two days, but the region rewards a slower pace and the cool climate is a welcome break from the coast.
Is the Kandy to Ella train worth it with a private driver?
Yes — it's the highlight of the region. The trick is that you ride the scenic Nanu Oya–Ella leg while your driver takes the car and luggage ahead to meet you. You get the views and the photos with none of the backtracking, and you skip the parts of the line that are less scenic.
What's the best base in the Hill Country?

Is the Hill Country cold?
It's cool, not cold — Nuwara Eliya sits at 1,900 m and can drop to 10°C at night, with mornings that need a fleece. Days are mild and comfortable for walking. It's the one part of Sri Lanka where you'll want long sleeves in the evening.
