Gal Oya National Park protects the largest reservoir in Sri Lanka, the Senanayake Samudra, and the extensive dry mixed evergreen forest that surrounds it in the remote Ampara district. The park's signature experience is a boat safari across the reservoir — one of the only places in the world where wild Asian elephants can be watched swimming between forested islands, using the water as a highway between feeding grounds. The herds are substantial, the boat approach is silent, and the sense of remoteness is complete: Gal Oya receives far fewer visitors than Yala or Udawalawe and the absence of crowds is part of the appeal. The park is about 5 to 6 hours from Colombo by private car, making it a natural addition to east-coast itineraries combining Arugam Bay or Batticaloa.
