The east coast is Sri Lanka's dry-season secret. When the south-west monsoon brings rain and rough seas to the popular southern beaches (roughly May to September), the east is at its best: calm turquoise water, empty sand and reliable sun. It's the answer for anyone visiting in the northern-hemisphere summer.
Two very different scenes anchor it. Trincomalee in the north-east has the calm, snorkel-friendly bays of Nilaveli and Uppuveli and the coral of Pigeon Island. Arugam Bay in the south-east is one of Asia's great surf towns, a relaxed strip of point-breaks and beach cafés. Why the east coast is a summer trip
Sri Lanka has two monsoons on opposite schedules. From about May to September the south-west coast is wet and choppy while the east is dry, calm and sunny — the reverse of the December-to-March pattern. If you're visiting in the European or North American summer, the east coast is where the good beach weather is, and your driver can route the whole tour around it.
Getting to the east coast
The east is a longer haul from the usual tourist chain — Trincomalee is around 3–4 hours from the Cultural Triangle, and Arugam Bay is an easy add-on after a Yala safari (about 2.5 hours up the coast). Because the drives are longer, having your own car and driver, rather than piecing together buses, is what makes an east-coast leg practical.

Arugam Bay is famous for its right-hand point-breaks that suit intermediate and advanced surfers, but nearby beaches like Baby Point and Whiskey Point have gentler waves and surf schools for beginners. Your driver can shuttle you between them.
How do you get to the east coast?
