Pasikuda with a private driver
Pasikuda Bay on the east coast is exceptional for one specific quality: it is one of the shallowest and most sheltered bays in Sri Lanka, protected by a coral reef that breaks the ocean swell far offshore and creates a lagoon where the water remains waist-deep for up to 300 metres from the shore. This unusual shallowness makes it the most family-friendly swimming beach in the country and has driven substantial tourism investment since the end of the civil war in 2009. The east coast dry season (May to September) aligns inversely with the southwest monsoon, making Pasikuda the place to head when the southern and western beaches are roughest. The drive from Colombo takes roughly 5 to 6 hours; most private-driver tours combine Pasikuda with nearby Kalkudah and a night in Batticaloa.

What your driver shows you in Pasikuda
- Waist-deep reef-sheltered lagoon — safe swimming for children and non-swimmers
- East-coast dry season (May–September) when the southwest is rough
- Adjacent to Kalkudah's more natural and less developed beach
How to get to Pasikuda
The simplest way to reach Pasikuda is with a private driver: you're met at Colombo Airport (CMB) with a name board and driven door to door, with no timetables, bus changes or luggage hassle. Because the daily rate is charged per vehicle rather than per person, it's also the best value for couples, families and small groups.
