Outside the surf season (November to March) the town is much quieter and some businesses close, but the beach and the surrounding wildlife are present year-round. The drive in from Colombo via the A4 highway is around 8 hours, or roughly 6 hours from Ella via the south-coast road — but the journey is interesting, passing through the Kumana National Park buffer zone, the Lahugala tank (a reliable elephant-watching spot), and the Pottuvil lagoon where crocodiles, water monitors and a remarkable variety of waterbirds are visible from the road.

Surfing Arugam Bay — breaks, seasons and skill levels
Main Point is the headline break — a long right-hander that peels along a rocky point and can produce rides of 200 metres or more on a good day. It is best for intermediate to advanced surfers; beginners should wait until they have some experience before paddling out here. Whiskey Point, 5km north of the bay, is a powerful but more forgiving right-hander that suits confident beginners and intermediates on smaller days. Baby Point at the southern end of the main beach is the ideal learning wave — small, slow and with a sandy bottom — and is where the surf schools operate daily lessons. Pottuvil Point, near the lagoon entrance, is a quality wave that gets fewer visitors than Main Point. The season peaks in June, July and August when the swell is most consistent. April and May can be good but the swell is less reliable; September and October are the tail end of the season. November to March is the off-season: flat surf, significantly quieter town. Beyond the surf — wildlife and lagoons near Arugam Bay
The road between Arugam Bay and Yala passes through some of Sri Lanka's least-visited wildlife habitat. Kumana National Park (also called Yala East) lies 30km south and protects an internationally important Ramsar wetland — the Kumana mangrove swamp and lagoon hosts nesting colonies of painted storks, purple herons, spoonbills and open-billed storks in the May–August breeding season, along with resident crocodiles, water monitors and estuarine birdlife. Lahugala National Park, 15km west of Arugam Bay on the main road, surrounds a tank (reservoir) that elephants visit daily at dusk to drink and bathe — a road-stop elephant sighting that your driver can time perfectly. The Pottuvil lagoon at the northern end of Arugam Bay can be explored by outrigger canoe or small motorboat at sunrise, when the light is golden and the bird activity is highest. These stops make the drive into or out of Arugam Bay considerably more interesting than the road time suggests.
