The Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic — what to expect
The Dalada Maligawa is Sri Lanka's most sacred Buddhist site and the centrepiece of any Kandy visit. The relic — a tooth of the Buddha — is housed inside a series of golden caskets in an inner sanctum that visitors cannot enter, but the procession chamber, the outer hall and the surrounding Royal Palace Museum are richly decorated and genuinely impressive. Puja ceremonies happen three times daily: at approximately 5:30am, 9:30am and 6:30pm. The evening puja is the most atmospheric — drummers, conch-shell blowers and white-robed devotees fill the courtyard as the casket is paraded behind a screen of flowers. Best time to visit Kandy
