Sri Lanka's south coast is the classic finish to an island tour: a run of golden beaches, surf towns and one of Asia's most atmospheric colonial towns, all within an easy drive of each other. It's where most trips wind down before flying home, trading temples and tea for the sea.
The anchor is Galle, whose Dutch Fort — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — is a walled old town of boutique shops, cafés and ramparts you can walk at sunset. West and east of it lie the beaches: Unawatuna and Mirissa for swimming and whale watching, Weligama for learning to surf, Hikkaduwa for reefs. With a private driver you can base in one spot and day-trip the rest, or hop along the coast at your own pace.

Whale watching from Mirissa
Between roughly November and April, Mirissa is one of the world's most reliable spots to see blue whales — the largest animal that has ever lived — along with sperm whales, dolphins and the odd orca. Boats leave at dawn; your driver gets you to the harbour for the early departure when the sea is calmest and sightings are best. We can arrange the boat as part of the plan.
Where to base and how long to stay
Two nights is enough for Galle plus one beach; three or four lets you add whale watching, a surf lesson and slower beach time. Galle and Unawatuna make a good culture-plus-swimming base; Mirissa or Weligama suit beach-and-surf trips. It's about 2 hours from Galle back to Colombo Airport on the expressway, so the south coast is an easy final stop before departure.

How many days do you need on the south coast?

When can you see whales at Mirissa?
The main season runs from about November to April, when the sea is calm and blue whales pass close to shore. Boats depart at dawn for the best conditions — your driver has you at the harbour in time and we can book the trip for you.
Which is the best beach on the south coast?
It depends on what you want: Unawatuna for easy swimming near Galle, Mirissa for the classic palm-fringed curve and whales, Weligama for beginner surf, Hikkaduwa for reefs and snorkelling. With a private driver you can sample several.
How far is the south coast from Colombo Airport?
Galle is about 2 hours from Colombo Airport (CMB) on the southern expressway, and Mirissa around 2.5. That makes the south coast a convenient last stop — many trips spend the final nights here before an easy transfer to the airport.
