Here's how the coast breaks down, west to east.
Bentota & Beruwala — easy first stop
Closest to Colombo and the airport, this stretch is calm, wide and family friendly, with the Bentota river on one side and the sea on the other. It's a natural first or last night if you're flying in late.
Hikkaduwa — reef and turtles
Good snorkelling straight off the beach, a protected reef, and turtles you can often see in the shallows. Livelier than Bentota, with more places to eat.
Unawatuna & Galle — the postcard duo
Unawatuna is the calendar-photo bay: sheltered, swimmable, walkable. Ten minutes away, the Galle Fort is a UNESCO-listed Dutch old town of ramparts, cafés and boutiques — best explored at sunset when the walls glow.

Weligama is where nearly everyone learns to surf — a gentle beach-break bay with boards for rent every few metres. Neighbouring Mirissa is the launch point for blue whale watching (best November to April) and has the livelier nightlife of the two.
Tangalle — the quiet end
Keep driving east and the crowds fall away. Tangalle has long, wild, uncrowded beaches — beautiful, though the currents mean you should swim where it's sheltered. This is the coast at its most peaceful.
