When you book a private driver in Sri Lanka you broadly have three choices: a point-to-point transfer (A to B, one way), a day tour (driver picks you up in the morning and returns you to the same place in the evening), or a multi-day hire where the driver travels with you as you move from hotel to hotel across the island. Each type has a different pricing structure, a different level of planning involved, and suits different kinds of travellers. Airport transfers: getting from A to B for a fixed price
An airport transfer is the simplest hire you can make. Your driver meets you at arrivals with a name board, loads your bags and drives you to a single destination — your hotel in Kandy, Galle, Sigiriya or wherever you are headed first. The price is fixed in advance (no meter running), the journey is point-to-point, and the driver is not expected to wait or make multiple stops. If your first night is in Negombo, Galle or another city that has a reasonably direct road from the airport, a transfer is almost always cheaper than a day tour because you are only paying for one leg. Day tours: exploring a region and returning to your base
A day tour is ideal when you want to stay in a comfortable base — say, Kandy or Galle — and spend a day visiting sights in the surrounding area. Your driver collects you after breakfast, takes you around a circuit of temples, national parks, waterfalls or markets, and returns you to the same hotel that evening. The day-tour rate is higher than a simple transfer because the driver is with you for ten or more hours, covering more ground and waiting at each sight. That said, compared with hiring tuk-tuks or using taxis for each stop, a day tour with one driver in an air-conditioned car almost always works out better value — and far less stressful. Multi-day tours: moving across the island with one driver
A multi-day hire is the classic way to see Sri Lanka. You and your driver check out of each hotel together, move to the next destination, and check in again. Your bags stay in the car; your driver handles navigation, parking and timing; you simply arrive at each new place refreshed. Multi-day hires typically attract a slightly better per-day rate than one-off day tours, because the driver and operator can plan logistics more efficiently. They are also the only practical option for visiting the cultural triangle, hill country and south coast in one trip without spending hours on buses or arranging multiple separate bookings.
When is a transfer cheaper than a day tour?
As a rule, if you are moving from one base to another and have no specific stops in mind, a transfer rate applies — you pay for the journey, not for the driver's time waiting. If you want to stop at Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage on the way from the airport to Kandy, for example, that turns the journey into something closer to a day tour, and most drivers will price it accordingly. How to decide which type you need
Think about your trip structure. If you are flying in and out of the same airport and plan to sleep in two or more different towns, a multi-day hire is almost certainly the right answer. If you are staying put in one place and want to see nearby sights, book individual day tours. If you just need to get from the airport to your first hotel without any detours, a straight transfer is the most cost-effective option.
