We match travellers with vetted Sri Lankan drivers. The format never changes. You get one driver and one vehicle for the whole journey, priced per vehicle per day from around DKK 380 rather than per person, with fuel, tolls, parking and the driver's own meals and room already included.
This page covers what is particular to leaving from Denmark: the flights from Copenhagen, the ETA, which school breaks match the weather, and what it all costs in kroner. Everything on the trip itself, your driver included, works in English.
Flights: one stop from Copenhagen, so check the routing
We can't confirm a non-stop between Copenhagen and Colombo. Plan on one stop. Qatar Airways flies via Doha, Emirates via Dubai and Turkish Airlines via Istanbul, and Etihad via Abu Dhabi also exists. Door to door it is typically 14 to 17 hours, depending on how long you wait in the hub.
There is a way round the Gulf. Take a short hop to Frankfurt or London Heathrow, then SriLankan Airlines non-stop to Colombo in roughly ten to eleven hours. Gulf routings have been disrupted in 2026, so check current schedules and routings before you book, and favour a fare you can change if the airline moves your departure.
The time difference is 4½ hours in winter and 3½ in summer, which is mild for a long-haul trip. Keep the first day gentle: the 7-day and 10-day routes both start in Negombo, close to the airport.
| From | Routing | Airlines | Journey time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Copenhagen (CPH) | via Doha | Qatar Airways | ≈ 14–17h total |
| Copenhagen (CPH) | via Dubai | Emirates | ≈ 14–17h total |
| Copenhagen (CPH) | via Istanbul | Turkish Airlines | ≈ 14–17h total |
| Copenhagen (CPH) | via Frankfurt or London Heathrow | Short hop, then SriLankan Airlines non-stop | Varies with the connection (SriLankan leg ≈ 10–11h) |
The visa: a free ETA for Danish citizens, but you still have to apply
Since 25 May 2026 the tourist ETA has been free for Danish passport holders. It covers 30 days, allows two entries counted from your first arrival, and can be extended for a fee. Free does not mean optional. You need the approval before you board, so apply online at eta.gov.lk well before you fly.
The site is available in English, German, French, Spanish and several other languages, but not Danish, so allow a little extra time for the form. Use eta.gov.lk and nothing else; look-alike sites charge for something that costs nothing. The scheme is new, so check eta.gov.lk again shortly before departure. Children under 12 get a free tourist ETA for up to 30 days, whatever their nationality.
When to go: winter break, Christmas and the dry season
Sri Lanka has two monsoons on opposite sides of the island, so one coast is nearly always in season. December to March is dry on the west coast, the south and in the hills, which is where most first trips go. Between May and September it flips: the south-west monsoon rains on the Galle coast while Trincomalee and Arugam Bay on the east coast have their best months.
The Danish school calendar fits better than most. Vinterferie (week 7) and Christmas sit in the middle of the dry season, and Easter lands close to the shift into April. Efterårsferie (week 42) is the exception.
October and November are the wettest months island-wide, so we would rather be straight about it than call them dry. The summer holidays, from late June to August, make a different trip, covered further down. Dates shift between years and municipalities, so check yours before you book.
| Your holiday window | Fit | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Vinterferie (week 7, February) | Excellent | Dry season in the west, the south and the hills, and calmer than Christmas. With the weekends either side it is typically nine days, enough for the 7-day route if you fly out on a Saturday. |
| Christmas & New Year (late December) | Excellent | Peak season with the driest weather in the most-visited regions. It is also the island's busiest time, so book your driver and hotels early. |
| Easter (March or April) | Good | Late March is still dry season. April is warm and mostly dry island-wide between the monsoons, and Sinhala and Tamil New Year (13–14 April) closes some shops but is worth catching. |
| Efterårsferie (week 42, October) | Mixed | The inter-monsoon: rain comes in bursts and October–November are the wettest months island-wide. Prices are lower and it can work, but if you can swap it for February, swap it. |
What it costs in kroner
The daily rate is per vehicle, not per person. A sedan is typically DKK 380–550 a day and an SUV from around DKK 515. The price covers fuel, tolls, parking and the driver's own meals and room. Two people in a sedan are splitting DKK 380 on the cheapest days. That is DKK 190 each.
At the lowest rate a week in a sedan comes to around DKK 2,650 for driver and car, ten days to around DKK 3,800 and fourteen days to around DKK 5,300. The kroner figures are converted from dollars at about 6.9 to the dollar and rounded, so treat them as a guide. Hotels, meals and entry tickets are paid by you and are not in these numbers, because a family guesthouse and a tea-country hotel sit too far apart for one figure to be honest.
If another quote comes in far below this, look at what it leaves out. Fuel and tolls, extra charges that appear on the day, or a driver who is not licensed are the usual gaps.
| Cost line | Typical price (DKK) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Private driver & sedan, per day | DKK 380–550 | Per vehicle, all-inclusive: fuel, tolls, parking and the driver's own meals and room. |
| 7 days in a sedan, from | DKK 2,650 | Driver and car for the whole trip at the lowest daily rate. The 7-day route fits vinterferie. |
| 10 days in a sedan, from | DKK 3,800 | The classic loop with a safari. A natural fit for Christmas and New Year. |
| 14 days in a sedan, from | DKK 5,300 | Two weeks including the east coast, best done in the summer holidays. |
| Hotels, meals & entry tickets | Paid by you | Not part of the daily rate. The trip cost calculator below prices your own route. |
| Tourist ETA | Free | For Danish citizens since 25 May 2026. Apply only at eta.gov.lk. |

On the road: right-hand at home, left-hand here
Denmark drives on the right and Sri Lanka on the left, so your instincts work against you from the first junction. Visitors who want to drive themselves also need a temporary Sri Lankan licence. Distances mislead too. Colombo to Kandy is about 115 kilometres and takes a little over three hours because the road runs through every town, and Kandy to Ella is about 140 kilometres and most of four hours on mountain roads shared with buses and tuk-tuks.
That is why the driver model exists. Your driver waits while you climb Sigiriya's roughly 1,200 steps, knows the Ella road is slower than the map suggests, and books lunch in the right town. Every driver is ID- and licence-checked, past travellers leave reviews you can read before you decide, and you receive the driver's contact details once the trip is confirmed.

Itineraries that work from Denmark
7 days: the vinterferie route
Negombo, Sigiriya, Kandy, the train to Ella and a south-coast beach. Tight but workable inside the nine days of week 7 with its weekends.
10 days: Christmas and New Year
Anuradhapura and Sigiriya, Kandy and the tea country, a safari at Udawalawe and the coast from Mirissa to Galle, all at an easy pace.
14 days: summer, with the east coast
Wilpattu and Jaffna, Trincomalee and Arugam Bay, then Kandy, Ella and Yala. The east is in season from May to September, so this one suits the summer holidays.
Summer holidays: point the trip east
The Danish summer break, from late June to August, is not winter sun. The south-west monsoon rains on the Galle coast in those months, while the east coast is in season: Trincomalee with snorkelling at Pigeon Island, Pasikudah, and Arugam Bay for surf.
Summer at home is good. The argument here is not escaping the weather but that one side of the island is dry while the other is wet, and the 14-day route above is built around the dry one. A driver takes you between east and west without a string of bus and train changes.
