Canada isn't among the island's ten biggest visitor markets, and honestly, that works in your favour: you'll share the tea country with British and Australian travellers but very few compatriots, and nothing here is priced with the Canadian wallet in mind. A private driver — the standard way visitors get around — costs about C$90 a day for the whole vehicle.

Flights: one stop from Toronto, Montreal or Vancouver
No airline flies Canada–Colombo nonstop, so the trip turns on one good connection. From Toronto and Montreal the Gulf routings are the strongest: Qatar Airways via Doha and Emirates via Dubai run around nineteen to twenty-three hours door to door, with Turkish via Istanbul a solid alternative. The final leg into Colombo is short — about four and a half hours from Doha.
From Vancouver it's longer whichever way you go: either eastward over Europe and the Gulf, or westward via an East Asian hub such as Hong Kong or Singapore, both working out to roughly twenty-two to twenty-six hours. Whichever coast you start from, an evening arrival plus a first night in Negombo near the airport beats launching into the itinerary exhausted.

The visa: a C$70 ETA you sort in an evening
Canadian passport holders need the Electronic Travel Authorization from the official eta.gov.lk site. The tourist ETA costs US$50 — about C$70 — and covers 30 days with double entry, extendable in Colombo if the trip grows. Approval usually arrives within a day or two; applying a week before you fly leaves comfortable margin.
Your passport needs six months of validity from the arrival date. And book through the government site only — the lookalike agencies resell the identical approval at double the price.
When to go: the Canadian winter is the Sri Lankan dry season
Sri Lanka's two monsoons strike opposite coasts at different times of year, and the arrangement is almost custom-built for Canadians. December through March — the depth of winter at home — is the dry season across the west coast, the south and the hill country, which together hold most of the classic itinerary. Whale-watching off Mirissa peaks in exactly these months too.
March break deserves special mention. It falls at the gentle end of peak season: the weather still holds, the Christmas crowds are long gone, and prices have eased. Summer works differently — the classic coast is in monsoon, so July and August trips should point east to Trincomalee and Arugam Bay, where the season is at its height.

What it costs in Canadian dollars
On the ground, Sri Lanka costs a fraction of what the flight suggests. The private driver and car — the trip's backbone — runs about C$85–95 a day per vehicle, covering fuel, highway tolls, parking, and the driver's own meals and accommodation. Split two ways that's under C$50 each; split four ways in a van, less than a Toronto restaurant dinner.
Ten days of vehicle and driver totals roughly C$900–C$1,250 for the whole party. Mid-range double rooms run C$55–110 a night, meals rarely pass C$28 a day each, and official survey data puts overall average visitor spend near C$200 a day — a ceiling most Canadian travellers come in well under.

On the road: opposite side, different universe
Sri Lanka drives on the left — the opposite side from Canada — and the traffic culture is nothing like the 401 on its worst day. Buses hold the racing line, tuk-tuks materialise in every gap, and mountain roads to the tea country stack hairpins for hours. Self-driving requires an international permit endorsed locally, and almost no visitor bothers. This is not the place to learn left-side driving.
