The Spanish calendar settles the rest. Navidad lands in the dry season on the west and south coasts and in the hills, and Semana Santa usually sits right beside it. August, the Spanish holiday month, falls in the south-west monsoon, so an August trip should head east and inland instead of to the southern beaches.
We match travellers with vetted local drivers and book these trips every week. Below is what Spanish travellers ask us most: one-stop flights from Madrid, the free ETA (the official site is available in Spanish), which puentes are worth the flight, and what it all costs in euros.
Flights: one stop from Madrid, around 15–19 hours door to door
We can't point you to a non-stop flight from Madrid to Colombo (CMB), so plan on one stop. The usual combinations are Qatar Airways via Doha, Emirates via Dubai and Turkish Airlines via Istanbul, and Etihad via Abu Dhabi is another routing worth checking. Expect roughly 15 to 19 hours door to door. That range is approximate and depends on how long you wait at the hub.
A second option is a short hop to Frankfurt or London Heathrow, then SriLankan Airlines non-stop to Colombo, about ten hours from Frankfurt. Gulf routings have been disrupted in 2026, so check current schedules and routings before you book. Flying from Barcelona, Málaga or any other Spanish airport, compare connections on a search engine, because both the hours and the fare change.
The time shift is gentle. Mainland Spain is 4½ hours behind Sri Lanka in winter and 3½ in summer, a far smaller jump than a trip to the Americas.
| From | Routing | Airlines | Journey time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Madrid (MAD) | via Doha | Qatar Airways | ≈ 15–19 h door to door |
| Madrid (MAD) | via Dubai | Emirates | ≈ 15–19 h door to door |
| Madrid (MAD) | via Istanbul | Turkish Airlines | ≈ 15–19 h door to door |
| Madrid (MAD) | via Frankfurt (FRA) or London Heathrow (LHR) | Short hop in Europe, then SriLankan Airlines non-stop | Depends on the connection; FRA–CMB ≈ 10 h |
The visa: a free ETA for Spanish passport holders since May 2026
Spain is one of the 40 nationalities that have had a free tourist ETA since 25 May 2026. It is valid for 30 days, allows two entries counted from your first arrival, and can be extended for a fee, so it covers a typical two-week trip with room to spare. Children under 12 get a free tourist ETA of up to 30 days whatever their nationality.
Apply online at eta.gov.lk, which is available in Spanish as well as English. It costs nothing. It is still compulsory: you must hold the ETA before you arrive. Use the official site only, because look-alike sites charge extra for the same form. The scheme is new, so check eta.gov.lk again shortly before you fly.
When to go: Spanish holidays against two monsoons
The island has two monsoons that hit opposite coasts, so some part of it is almost always in good season. Pick the coast first. December to March is driest on the west and south coasts, in the hills and across the cultural triangle. May to September belongs to the east and the north, while the south-west monsoon drenches the west and south. October and November bring the inter-monsoon rains.
For travellers from Spain, Navidad is the safest bet and Semana Santa usually works too. August is the awkward one, but the answer is to point the trip east and inland, not to cancel it. Single puentes (long weekends built around a holiday) fall short, since each flight eats 15 to 19 hours; it pays to stretch them with a few days of leave.
| Your holiday window | Fit | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Navidad & New Year (≈ 22 Dec – 6 Jan) | Excellent | Peak dry season in the west, south and hills. It is also the busiest and priciest time, so book your driver and hotels well ahead. |
| Semana Santa (March or April) | Good | Late March is still dry season. If Easter falls in April you get the shoulder: warm and generally dry, with the Sinhala and Tamil New Year in mid-April and plenty of Sri Lankans travelling. |
| August | Mixed | The west and south are in monsoon. A trip pointed at the east coast and the dry interior works; the classic loop that ends on the southern beaches does not. |
| Puentes of December, May and October | Mixed | The December puente (6–8 Dec) arrives just as the inter-monsoon rains end. May and October fall in the south-west monsoon and the inter-monsoon rains. All three are short for a long-haul flight. |
What it costs in euros
The daily rate is per vehicle, not per person. That changes the sums. A car with a driver costs from around €50 a day (€50–75 depending on the vehicle) and an SUV from around €70, with fuel, tolls, parking and the driver's own meals and room included. Ten days by car comes to from around €505 in total, about €250 each for a couple.
Hotels, meals and entry tickets are paid separately, and we won't invent a hotel price, because it depends on what you book. Use the cost calculator and the price guide (both in English) to add up your own route. Sigiriya, for instance, costs around US$30 per person, roughly €28. The euro figures are rounded; prices are set in US dollars at about 1 USD = €0.92.
| Cost line | Typical price (EUR) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Car with driver, per day | ≈ €50–75 | Per vehicle, not per person. Covers fuel, tolls, parking and the driver's own meals and room. |
| SUV with driver, per day | from ≈ €70 | More comfort, and better on the tracks into the safari parks. |
| 7 days by car, driver only | from ≈ €355 | One car, one driver, airport to airport. Hotels, meals and tickets are extra. |
| 10 days by car, driver only | from ≈ €505 | About €250 each for two people sharing the car. |
| 14 days by car, driver only | from ≈ €710 | The per-person cost falls as more people share the vehicle. |
| Tourist ETA | €0 | Free for Spanish passport holders since 25 May 2026; apply only at eta.gov.lk. |

On the road: left-hand traffic and distances that mislead
In Spain you drive on the right; in Sri Lanka you drive on the left, among buses that overtake where they shouldn't and tuk-tuks that slip into any gap. Anyone who wanted to self-drive would also need a temporary Sri Lankan licence, and few think it worth the trouble. Distances mislead too: Colombo to Kandy is about 115 kilometres and takes over three hours, and Kandy to Ella is about 140 and takes nearly four.
Hiring a driver solves that. Your driver waits while you climb Sigiriya's 1,200 steps, knows that the road to Ella is slower than the map suggests, and plans lunch in the right town. Each morning you decide whether to stay or move on, without asking anyone.
Every driver on the platform has had an ID and driving licence check, and past travellers leave reviews you can read before you book. You receive your driver's contact details once the trip is confirmed.

Itineraries that work from Spain
7 days: the classic loop, short
Cultural triangle, the hill-country train to Ella and a finish on the south coast. It fits Semana Santa with a couple of extra days of leave; in August, ask your driver to swap the south-coast finish for the east.
10 days: Navidad at an easy pace
Culture, hills, a safari and the beach. The loop covers the regions that are driest from December to March, so Christmas and New Year suit it well.
14 days: the one for August
Adds the east coast (Trincomalee, Arugam Bay) and Yala. In August, ask your driver to trade the last days in Mirissa for more time in the east.
August: how to plan around the south-west monsoon
If August is when you have leave, leave the south and west coasts out as a beach destination. The south-west monsoon rains on them from May to September, and Mirissa's whale season runs from November to April. Swap those days for the east, where July and August are the peak months for the beaches and the whale watching off Trincomalee.
The interior holds up better. Our destination guides put August and September among the driest months in the cultural triangle, and the rain in Kandy and Ella usually eases between July and September. Yala works in August too, although its Block 1 normally closes in September and October. One warning: Kandy's Esala Perahera, a ten-day festival of costumed elephants held in late July or August, fills the hotels and raises prices, so book weeks ahead.
